Regarding a crucial matter in American politics, the former president Donald Trump has remained steadfast in his position, he doesn’t believe in election results. Whether Trump wins or loses, his reaction is always the same, he challenges the legitimacy of the outcome. He is reluctant to confirm the integrity of the upcoming election this year as well.
Despite his surprising victory in 2016, Trump continued to question the integrity of the voting process. He started preparing to challenge the results months before Election Day, accusing the system of being “rigged.” Even in the last presidential debate, Trump chose to leave the country hanging and refused to provide a firm response when moderator Chris Wallace challenged him on his commitment to a peaceful handover of power.
Even after winning the Electoral College and taking office, Trump continued to cast doubt on the validity of his victory in 2016 by falsely accusing massive voting fraud. A special commission was formed in response to his allegations, but it was unable to find any evidence supporting his assertions.
In 2020, Trump’s unwillingness to concede defeat is still evident. This time, though, he became obsessed with worries about mail-in voting—even in the absence of solid proof of widespread fraud. His stubbornness to back down ultimately led to his followers storming the Capitol on January 6, 2021, in an attempt to challenge the results of the Electoral College vote tally. Many of these individuals are now facing legal ramifications.
As polls now show Trump ahead of President Biden in certain circumstances, he voices cautious hope regarding the election’s fairness.
Nonetheless, Trump refrains from expressing his unwavering support for the electoral process, reserving the opportunity to express his concerns should problems emerge in the 2024 election. With a lingering pessimism, Trump declares his expectation of a fair election conclusion while reiterating his dedication to the welfare of the country.
Given his propensity to view judicial challenges to his authority as “election interference,” it is clear that Trump is set up to contest future election outcomes if they do not meet his expectations.
Beyond the confines of his campaign, Trump’s persistent assaults on election integrity—which CNN’s Marshall Cohen painstakingly detailed—have had a significant influence, especially on how other Republicans view US elections. As late as 2006, 92% of Republicans, according to Gallup polling data, said they were confident in the accuracy of the procedures involved in casting and tallying votes.
By comparison, 66% of Democrats and 70% of independents expressed a similar level of trust in the voting process. But by 2022, only 40% of Republicans—as opposed to 85% of Democrats and 67% of Independents—remaining confident in the fairness of the electoral process.

Although opposition party members frequently have doubts about the voting process, it is noteworthy that Republican confidence has dropped dramatically since 2018—from 77% to 40%. It’s important to remember that Republicans are not the only ones that are unhappy with election results.

Hillary Clinton expressed doubts about the validity of Trump’s presidency even after she lost to him in 2016, blaming her loss to Republican efforts to suppress the vote. Despite her misgivings, Clinton offered an olive branch in her concession address, praising the peaceful transition of power as a vital component of American democracy, and she accepted Trump’s Electoral College victory with grace.

However, the same level of magnanimity cannot be expected from Trump in the event of a loss. Instead, he is likely to double down on allegations of electoral malfeasance, echoing his previous claims of a conspiracy to undermine his electoral mandate, regardless of the voters’ verdict.
