The climax unfolded at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, where RCB secured a commanding 8-wicket triumph over the Smriti Mandhana-led Delhi Capitals.
Delhi Capitals (DC) suffered a shocking batting collapse against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) spinners as Smriti Mandhana and Co. registered a thrilling win in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) final on Sunday. Ending 16 years of hurt and disappointment, RCB claimed their first-ever trophy in T20 cricket. Chasing a modest target of 114 in the 20-over contest, skipper Smriti Mandhana played the role of an anchor while superstar Ellyse Perry remained unbeaten to seal a famous win for Bangalore.
Choosing to bat first, the Delhi Capitals grappled against RCB’s disciplined bowling unit, succumbing to a modest total of 113 runs. Shreyanka Patil emerged as the standout bowler, scalping a pivotal 4-wicket haul, complemented by Sophie Molineux’s three-wicket contribution, which dealt a significant blow to the Delhi batting order.
In the final match against DC, Perry contributed 35 runs off 37 balls. As an Australian all-rounder, she surpassed DC skipper Lanning to claim the top spot in the Orange Cap standings. Throughout the WPL 2024, the RCB batter accumulated an impressive total of 347 runs across nine games. Perry maintained an impressive average of 69.40 and secured two half-centuries during RCB’s victorious season. As the recipient of the Orange Cap, Perry is set to receive a prize of INR 5 lakh.
In the WPL 2024 final held in the national capital, Shreyanka Patil turned the match into a low-scoring affair by taking four wickets and conceding only 12 runs against DC. With support from Sophie Molineux, who took three wickets, RCB successfully bowled out DC for a meager total of 113 runs in 18.3 overs. Shreyanka, the RCB spinner, also secured the top spot in the Purple Cap standings by claiming a total of 13 wickets throughout the WPL 2024 season. As the Purple Cap winner, Shreyanka has been awarded INR 5 lakh as prize money.
Shafali Verma of the Delhi Capitals claimed the title for most sixes in the tournament, unleashing an impressive total of 20 sixes across 9 matches.
