Former NBA star Rajon Rondo, celebrated for his basketball prowess and notably playing a crucial role with the Boston Celtics, found himself entangled in legal issues following his arrest in southern Indiana over the weekend. The two-time NBA champion, who initially rose to prominence as a Kentucky basketball star and hails from Louisville, faced charges related to drugs and weapons during a traffic stop on Interstate 65 in Jackson County.
The arrest unfolded on Sunday afternoon when Indiana State Police, responding to reports of Rondo’s 2022 Black Tesla driving recklessly, pulled him over in Bartholomew County on Interstate 65. A state trooper, observing a traffic violation, initiated a stop as the vehicle entered Jackson County. Detecting the smell of marijuana, troopers conducted a search, revealing suspected marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a firearm in Rondo’s possession.
Despite not speeding at the time, dispatchers claimed Rajon Rondo’s Tesla was traveling above 100 mph. Additionally, the trooper noticed the absence of a license plate on his car. The charges against the 37-year-old NBA veteran include misdemeanors related to each case. Following his detention at Jackson County Jail, Rajon Rondo was released after posting bond.
Rajon Rondo’s significant basketball career spanned over 15 seasons in the NBA, with a prominent stint with the Boston Celtics, where he contributed to winning two NBA championships in 2008 and 2020. He played for various teams, including Boston, Dallas, Sacramento, Chicago, and Los Angeles (Lakers and Clippers).
The former All-Star has faced legal challenges in the past. In 2022, a Louisville woman obtained an emergency protection order, alleging threats on her life. However, after Rajon Rondo completed counseling, anger management classes, and a mental health evaluation, the order was rescinded. A similar order was requested again in March the following year, resulting in an agreed order after five months.
A child present in Rondo’s car during the arrest was released to a family member. While the exact court appearance date is unknown, Rondo is expected to face court at Jackson County Superior Court.
Born in Louisville in 1986, Rondo showcased hisbasketball skills at Eastern High and Oak Hill Academy before making significant contributions to the Kentucky Wildcats. Selected as the No. 21 overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, he enjoyed a 16-year career, securing NBA titles with the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. A four-time NBA All-Star, Rondo also led the league in assists three times and steals per game during the 2009-10 regular season. In September of the previous year, he was among the inductees into the UK Athletics Hall of Fame’s 2023 class, marking a significant milestone in his post-basketball journey.
