Assam’s Key BJP Muslim Leader Aminul Haque Laskar Joins Congress Ahead of 2024 LS Polls

A month before the Assamese Lok Sabha elections, Aminul Haque Laskar, a prominent member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), tendered his resignation and joined the Congress on Wednesday.

Before becoming the Assam BJP‘s inaugural minority MLA in 2016, Laskar served as the representative for the Sonai assembly constituency. Notable positions he held include deputy speaker of the Assam assembly and chairperson of the Assam State Commission for Minorities. However, in the 2021 election, he was defeated by Karim Uddin Barbhuiya of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

Laskar expressed his disappointment with the BJP by saying, “In Assam, the BJP has lost its ideology.” After 13 years of membership, the BJP has changed significantly from then on. The BJP used to talk about change back then.” On Wednesday, he became a formal member of the Congress in the presence of Jitendra Singh Alwar, the party’s Assam in-charge.

The Congress party in Assam welcomed a new member into its fold on Wednesday, with the party’s in-charge, Jitendra Singh Alwar, present during the induction. The new recruit, formerly affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), cautioned that his departure could affect the ruling party’s standing within the minority community. He drew parallels between the ideologies of the BJP and Badruddin Ajmal’s All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), alleging an increasing similarity.
