AAP Leaders Detained and House Arrested During Protests
Several Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members, including MLAs and councillors, were detained and house arrested during Friday’s protests outside the BJP headquarters. Delhi Police explained that volunteers were detained while en route to the demonstration. Over 25 leaders were reported detained at the Singhu border as they protested against alleged malpractices in the Chandigarh mayoral polls by the BJP. A video shared by news agency ANI showed AAP Haryana chief, Sushil Gupta, being apprehended by Delhi Police on his way to join the party’s protest at the BJP headquarters in Delhi.
AAP vs. BJP
Simultaneously, increased security measures were enforced across various parts of Delhi, with police barricading roads leading to the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg and deploying additional personnel. The BJP organized a counter-demonstration near the AAP office, accusing the Arvind Kejriwal government of corruption. BJP workers vehemently criticized Chief Minister Kejriwal, calling for his resignation. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva asserted, “The Kejriwal government has become synonymous with corruption. Every day a government scam is exposed before the people,” alleging a scam in the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) under the Kejriwal government’s patronage.
Gopal Rai, an AAP leader, claimed that party MLAs and council members had been “placed under house arrest ahead of the protest,” emphasizing, “We are protesting against BJP today because of the manner they colluded and how they were exposed in Chandigarh. The BJP is attempting to hide its actual nature from the public, as seen by the house detention of party MLAs and council members before to the nonviolent demonstration.”
Chief Minister Kejriwal responded by posting on social media about his worries, saying, “First, there was vote-stealing during the Chandigarh mayoral elections. People who are now traveling to other parts of Delhi to peacefully demonstrate against this are being stopped.” “What is going on?” he emphasized as he asked more questions about the detention of volunteers, council members, and elected MLAs.
On the Tuesday’s mayoral elections in Chandigarh, the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged victorious in all three races for mayor, senior deputy mayor, and deputy mayor. The Congress-AAP alliance, which had charged the presiding officer of manipulating voting materials, suffered a defeat as a result of this outcome.
