Bumrah Back, Rahul Out: India’s 5th Test Squad Update
In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially revealed the updated Indian squad for the upcoming fifth and final Test against England in Dharamsala. The much-anticipated return of Jasprit Bumrah to the squad was confirmed, marking a strategic move by the BCCI to manage the fast bowler’s workload effectively.
Bumrah, who was rested for the fourth Test in Ranchi, is expected to play a pivotal role in the final match, possibly replacing Akash Deep in the playing XI.
The BCCI, in an official release, stated, “Jasprit Bumrah, who was released from the squad for the 4th Test in Ranchi, will link-up with the squad in Dharamsala for the 5th Test.” This decision reflects the board’s careful planning to ensure the optimal performance and fitness of key players.
However, the positive news of Bumrah’s return was accompanied by the unfortunate update of KL Rahul being ruled out of the final Test due to a right quad injury. Rahul, presently under the observation of specialists in London, faced fitness uncertainties leading up to the match. The BCCI Medical Team is actively monitoring his condition and coordinating with specialists for a comprehensive management plan.

The absence of KL Rahul creates an opportunity for a reshuffling in the batting order, with the possibility of Devdutt Padikkal making an entry after Rajat Patidar’s less-than-impressive performances. This potential change could see Padikkal becoming the fifth debutant for India in the ongoing Test series against England.

In another roster adjustment, the off-spin bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar has been released from the squad. This move allows Sundar to participate in the Ranji Trophy semi-final for Tamil Nadu, considering the competition for selection with established spinners like Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav.
The BCCI clarified, “Washington Sundar has been released from the squad. He will join Tamil Nadu – his Ranji Trophy side – for their Ranji Trophy Semi-final fixture against Mumbai, starting March 2nd, 2024. He will join the India squad after the completion of the domestic fixture for the fifth Test if needed.”

In addition to the player updates, it was revealed that Mohammed Shami underwent successful surgery on February 26 for his right heel problem. The pace bowler is currently in the recovery phase and is expected to commence his rehabilitation process at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
The updated squad for the fifth Test includes a mix of experienced players and potential debutants: Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (WK), KS Bharat (WK), Devdutt Padikkal, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, and Akash Deep.
Despite having already secured an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the Test series against England, a victory in the final Test assumes importance for India in the context of the World Test Championship points table. The team aims to maintain its strong position and further solidify its standing in the championship.
